Shehar ki Ladki.. the 90’s Anthem..

A tag line for Cadbury Bourneville chocolate says, ‘you just don’t buy it, you have to earn it’.. Something similar goes for this article too.. You cannot simply read and enjoy this.. You have to prove your credentials for the same.. You have to have spent your childhood in 90’s and should have enjoyed and been proud of everything that’s 90’s blessed us with. I won’t go into details of 90’s but will concentrate on Hindi films.. Rather film songs.. Actually just one song.. Shehar ki ladki..
Now please stop, if you have not seen /heard this song. You have to see it first. Lucky you that you can see this song with just one click here, unlike us who had to lie to our parents, bunk our school, buy tickets in black and make sure no one from our mohalla sees us while we stand in queue to enter the cinema hall. If you have not seen it, I recommend you see it. If you have already seen it, I strongly recommend you see it again. You can thank me later for it. Once you have seen the song you can continue reading the article.

The song starts with a Mercedes coming and stopping on middle of a road. The top of it opens and sitting there is the lady who gave word ‘Mast’ its real meaning. The one and only Raveena Tandon.. She gets down from the car, walks towards a peculiar bunch of guys, who all get charged up as if each one got a dozen of Duracells in their back once they see Raveena walking towards them.. For the naïve, it will may seem nonsense.. Why would a girl park her car in the middle of the road and other guys start dancing after seeing her instead of saying ‘Ae madam, gaadi baaju mein lagao’. Well Let me explain from the start.. the car opens from the top.. It means open your mind.. Ready to accept new things.. It also symbolizes the dispersing of clouds / darkness and sun coming out.. For the current generation going ohh ahh on Sunny Leone, FYI Raveena means sunny. Guys on the road symbolize life on planet earth, which gets all charged up when sun comes out.. So deep.. but believe me it is just the beginning..

Next cut.. half a dozen motor bikers dressed in black, wearing black helmets appear on the screen.. and among them appears our hero Sunil Shetty wearing an oversized full white dress which can shame Liz Hurley’s Dress on Red Carpet and they start dancing . The immortal words ‘ Ladki .. Shahar ki Ladki ‘ start playing in the background. All those ‘Ship of Theseus’ fans.. Listen carefully.. you don’t have to be boring to give a message.. You can do it in style like in 90’s. See the how Shetty Anna appears among the dark clad men wearing white like a silver line in clouds.. a ray of hope among gloom…. I could have compared it to Kalki Avtar too.. But let us stick to sliver lining thing.. And those chuckling at Anna’s dress size, it has a message too.. It means always give more than 100%, like in this case the Anna’s tailor gave at least 130%.

With such a spectacle on the screen, it is quite easy to get lost and miss the lyrics.. But I am here at your rescue.. song says.. ‘Ladki Shahar ki ladki.. Aankh lada ke poochhe hi How are you..haath mila ke poochhe how do you do? Style pe uski.. Smile pe uski haay tabiyat fadki.. Shehar ki ladki’’...Well.. This was the era before Fakebook (where fake people like and love you 15 times a day but don’t even recognize you when you meet in real).. This was real world.. girls used to talk to you eye to eye and used to shake hands, not poke on social media.. And the results were instantaneous.. Girl smiles, shows off her styles.. Millennial kids will take 2 years on FB and whatsapp before they shake hands with the girl and make the girl smile.. Anna does it in first meeting... that too within a minute.. that’s 90’s for you.. and you talk about advancement.. morons.. Well you can say, but that’s too dangerous.. how can you get so flirtatious on first meeting.. that’s risky.. Clearly you have watched the song but not closely enough.. See the bikers dancing behind Anna.. all wearing helmets.. You know what that means.. Protection.. Nasty but with Safety.. We had it all covered..

Song goes on… Lyrics keeps getting deeper.. Raveena gets naughtier and naughtier... locations change from Railway track , to car parking to dockyards.. The magic continues and it grows on you.. there are many more messages in the song.. but again.. Can’t spoon feed you everything.. Go and watch it and discover it for yourself.. Do let me know what you learn.. Lest you miss, you will see that those helmets do come off for a short time of course.. But they do.. When you are in love, you do let your guards down for sometime but only to get it back.. Like in this song.. Wow…. How deep.. So proud.. Nothing but respect and love..
