Band baaja baarat

This has been a disappointing year for me as far as Bollywood movies are concerned. The year which 3 of 5 biggest hits include Dabangg, Golmaal 3 and Housefull, is sure to be a nightmare for people whose minds are not detachable. Prerequisite to watch these movies is to leave your brain at home, obviously I can’t do that given my mind is not detachable.

Honestly speaking... I was not very hopeful or excited while paying Rs 180 per ticket for a Yashraj Movie, which lately churning out amazingly shitty movies like Neel and Nikki, Lafange Parindey, Dil Bole Haddippa, Jhoom Brabar Jhoom, and Tashan. Only document about these movies, Aditya Chopda was interested in, was the Profit and Loss statement not the script.

Coming back to Band baaja Baarat (BBB), a new director, a new guy and a gal whose track record consisted of Rab ne bana di Jodi and Badmaash Company, don’t ignite much enthusiasm. Add to that a title song sounds like “ Tharki be.. Tharki Be.. “. It sounds so insulting to many.. I mean.. You don’t call a blind person blind. You can’t make fun of anyone’s sexual preferences. But to my pleasant surprise, BBB turned out to be a much better movie than expected. Here are my reasons why I feel BBB is a better movie without any Sheela’s Jawani or  Badnaam Munni.

1)      Entrepreneur: Remember those movies where our Hero used to go office after office with a file of certificates in a floral print shirt to be rejected again and again. And lastly came home almost dancing to announce... Maa mujhe naukri mil gayi hai maa.. Maa.. yeh dekho maa.. mujhe naukri mil gayi. And Heroines used to complain about Hero’s naukri saying his job to be worth 2 rs. “ Teri do takiya di naukri, mera laakhon ka saawan jaaye”. After those movies we suddenly got movies where Hero was invariably returning from London or USA after studding in a college where only elective he chose was about flirting with girls at beaches, libraries, classrooms. After that he returned to take control of his father’s company with turnover move than India’s GDP.

Well BBB is different from above movies in two respects; it’s the leading lady not the hero with a cause. And this time it is not her fight against men who violated her. She wants to her own business and does not want to go for some typical job.    Second thing she is not a mother Teresa who want to make a difference to the poor and blah blah. She is a true entrepreneur with a solid Business plan.  This theme is like a fresh air you get after opening your window in the morning.

2)      Natural feelings.. natural depiction: I must admit our filmmaker’s creativity when it came to show sex on the screen. They showed all kinds of flowers touching each other, birds flying and window curtains fluttering. If the sex between them was not consensual, they showed fast running ceiling fan. It was left to our fertile imagination to imagine who actually happened. Well BBB is different in that sense. It shows most natural feelings of two young people doing it in most convincing manner without being vulgar or cheap. Surely our Bollywood has matured, for a surprise maturity is being shown by young bloods first.

3)      Delhi based: I don’t know what’s wrong with our filmmakers which make them incapable of thinking beyond Mumbai when it comes to choose city in which story is based. 99% of our movies are based out of Mumbai. This is unfair to other cities of our India who deserves at least equal rights to be shown on silver screen if not more. History is witness Bollywood has given some excellent movies when story moved out of Mumbai. Movies based on other cities have a freshness of their own. Take few examples... Khosla ka Ghosla, Rang de Basanti, Oye Lucky Lucky oye even Delhi six. Can you imagine these movies based in Mumbai? Certainly not. There are few other movies like Manorama Six feet under, Teesri kasam, Peepli live, Howrah Bridge which thought beyond Mumbai and created sheer magic.
Well BBB does capture Delhi and its rustic smell so brilliantly. Kudos to the leading pair, none of them are from Delhi yet they play Delhi lads with aplomb.

I agree; there are some flaws in the movie too... Well its directors debut... You can ignore them given it’s an honest movie. I could have written about BBB’s faults, but I am too tired. Thoda rest karne do.. :P
