10 M's that Matter in our Indian Politics - Part 3

7)      Mandal: Arguably the biggest M of all. The Mandal commission allowed reservations for socially backward castes including Scheduled caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in educational institutes and government jobs. A good initiative with worst intent. Mr. VP Singh used this report to divide our society into Backwards and Forwards. By doing this he took our mentality to the medieval times, where person was recognized by his birth not his deeds. Erstwhile aspiring leaders like Laloo Prasad Yadav, Mayavati, Ram Vilas Paswan, Kashi Raam, Kalyan Singh recognized the political value of this mandal commission report and exploited to the maximum extent for their political gains. Well.. Some sections have certainly gained from the proposed reservations, but it is still a debatable issue whether the gains are more than the permanent damages done by this to our social structure and political thought process.

8)      Madam: We Indians are always devoid of quality women politicians. Barring few exceptions, our women politicians most comprises of wives, widows, keeps, girlfriends, bahoos and other female relative of some bigger renowned male politicians. Mostly women politicians start their career when due to some reasons their male Godfathers are not being able to contest the elections. So these women are often used as puppets for their male godfathers. I won’t take names, but These “Madams” have done more harm than good to our Indian political scenario.

I wish we get some real women leader in future, which looks like a distant possibility in current situations.

9)      Mahangai : Mehangai is another constant running gag of our national and state politics. This M has given food for thoughts, reasons for bandhs/protests, and right to stall parliament to almost all political parties. This Mahangai has ruined political careers, brought down governments ( Though it’s a different matter, that the successor government made the situation even worse). In our Indian politics Onions brings real tears. We have seen governments getting formed on basis of impractical election promises like Rs 2 per kg Rice, free electricity, more and more subsidy, and unreal minimum support prices. These entire problems belong to basic problem of Mehangai ( Inflation). We as a nation always believe in short term solutions for this long term problem. Obviously some of us make their living out of us, some smarter breed of people make their career and vote banks based on this M.

10)      Mother tongue / Motherland : I won’t say it is the latest addition to our Politics, but definitely has been grabbing much headlines during recent times. As our constitution makers  formed states based on language spoken by  majority, it was an unwanted M they failed to fore see. Some of the political parties have decided to take up this issue to compensate for their lack of ability to think about development and progress related issues. This M has shown us ugly episodes of Indians beaten , thrashed, looted, raped and even killed in their own country, just because they spoke different language or were born in different part  of country. Definitely one of the most  hurting MS of our Indian politics. We can only wish that our political parties will think beyond their petty political benefits and think of a nation level vision.
