Visiting Aurangzeb's Tomb

Whereas whole of Maharashtra is now overwhelmed by the legend of great Chhatrapati Shivaji, on an non-descript lane in Aurangabad under an unmarked grave lies the man against whom Shivaji fought all his life. Alamgir Muhi-uddin Mohammad Aurangzeb. The same person by whose name city Aurangabad is named after.

I took out the time to visit his grave while others accompanying me waited outside. Even others also suggested against visiting Alamgir's tomb saying wahan pe aakhir rakha kya hai!! But visiting his final resting place made me realise the famous quote, " After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box.".

The man who ruled India for 49 years with absolute authority finally gets a place in the most modest place with a blind guy standing by his grave who narrates a 85 second speech about Alamgir Aurangzeb in lieu of any amount you may give him as alms. May be Aurangzeb also saw and realized his fate and overall futility of life at his deathbed. That's why the dying old man confessed to his son, Azam, in February 1707, "I came alone and I go as a stranger. I do not know who I am, nor what I have been doing."

Rest in peace, Alamgir.. Have your much needed rest, which you never had in your life and neither you let anyone else around you have it when you were alive.
