Deewane to dewane hain - a golden leaf from 90s pop music

Some songs are popular, some are chartbuster and some songs are prophetic. Not many songs are all at the same time, but song Deewane to Deewane hain ( DTDH) is a rare combination of all.

Featuring one and only Shweta Shetty, the original husky voice diva ( way before Rani Mukherjee), this song was a craze in summers of 98. Getting a glimpse of this song on DD Metro or listening on this song on a Walkman ( Hope you remember what Walkman meant to teenagers in that era ) was something beyond that can be explained to current generation.
90s may sound like things of last century and outdated, but 90's pop music was something we never saw before and sadly never saw after either. Alisha chinoy, Rageshwary, Sunita Rao, Baba Sehgal, Phalguni Pathak, Lucky Ali, Devang Patel, Aryans, Silk route, Nazia Hasan , Remo, Daler Mehandi, and (how can you forget) Altaf Raja, along with many others led sort of a musical revolution .. These people created music which was independent of Bollywood and made Bollywood sweat in terms of popularity. DTDH is one of best of that golden era product, a representative.
Listening to song DTDH 22 years after its release gives an entirely different meaning to its lyrics. Seems this song was written for lockdown and its effects on love filled hearts and hormone charged young bodies.
" Khidakee Peh Aaou na Bahar Naa Jau
Kaise Mein Sara Din Ghar Mein Bitau
Najare Milau Toh Mein Kaise Milau
Deewane Deewane Toh Deewane Hai"
Tell me any better lines to describe lockdown, I will be waiting. While you search for those better lines, let me tell some special things about this song. Word ‘Deewane’ has been used three times in first line, and every time it has different meaning. Talk about Yamak alankar and its usage..
And what to say about its music video.. its theme though unintentional, is highly feminist and way ahead of its time. Remember Bollywood was making movies like Raja ki aayegi baarat, KKHH and Hum Aapke hain koun, where woman was shown as Devi, Abla and chhui mui and DTDH shows the lady as a brat queen who knows what she wants and she is shownfully aware of her seduction prowess. It has the vibe of #MyChoice and self confidence which was rare in mainstream music at that time.

Watch this music video if you haven’t yet or you are welcome re-live the magic again.. May be after that, you will know why 90s kids don’t like Yo Yo and Badshah brand of songs.
